Class A4 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ passes through Horsted Keynes station on 14th October 2018.

There weren’t really many options for filming in the 1970’s – so it wasn’t until the introduction of handheld video cameras in the late 1980’s that I started to take some video footage.
The first record I have is dated in November 1989 at Preston Station after I purchased a Panasonic SVHS-C camcorder. I followed that up with some shots at Carlisle and steam on the Settle & Carlisle line, along with some ECML footage at Thirsk and Pilmoor. I thought I had more – suspiciously a third VHS-C tape I have contains a friends kids opening presents on Christmas day in 1992…..thanks pal!
I’ve got some recordings from 1989 to 1991, but then due to a change of career and a house move – nothing much until the early 2000’s as work and family commitments took over. Some of the quality isn’t great, but its watchable.
The transition to digital format in 2000 helped, but video footage took up quite a chunk of the memory card so it was around 2008 before I got back in the saddle.
Since then with the advances of phones/ video capabilities I’ve got some better footage and the quality is a lot better.
